POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
The Lifeguard Instructor teaches exciting and interesting courses in Lifeguarding, CPR, AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens to create and maintain a safe and positive atmosphere.
The Lifeguard instructor promotes member, staff, and participant safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures, while enticing a lifeguarding career.
This position will also assist the Safety and Risk Management Director with administrative duties related to training.
This position is seasonal full time (30-40 hours per week) OR permanent part time (20-29 hours per week) depending on candidate's availability.
Some evening and weekend shifts will be required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1.
Conducts Lifeguard courses in a manner consistent with the course design, maintains accurate and complete records as required, and evaluates and makes suggestions to participants for improvement 2.
Prepare materials, content, and classroom for activities, communicating course objectives to students to build and maintain effective, positive relationships with staff and participants 3.
Use computers, audio-visual aids, and other equipment and materials necessary to supplement coursework and engage participants 4.
Communicate with Risk Director when needing books, materials, and supplies for courses to ensure students have all the materials they need to succeed in the course 5.
Ensure health and safety of course participants, especially when completing strenuous activities 6.
Attends all staff meetings and Inservice training to maintain skills, build connections with staff, and exchange your ideas with others 7.
Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines in the aquatic area, while explaining to members and students the reasoning behind the rules 8.
Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures, completing incident/accident reports as required QUALIFICATIONS: Current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First Aid, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Bloodborne Pathogens, Lifeguard Instructor, and completes YMCA program-specific trainings upon hire At least six months of experience with working in an aquatic’s environment Exhibits great communication and listening skills to work with staff and members At least 17 years of age Knowledge of providing customer and personal services to members, delivering a quality experience WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards and maintain certification-levels of physical and mental readiness.
The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, move around on the pool deck, and assist patrons of all ages in the pools.
The employee is frequently required to utilize oral and listening comprehension and expression to observe distress signals in the Aquatics Environment and enforce safety regulations.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to ten pounds and perform in-water and on-land rescues for patrons of various body weights.
